When is SpearsFest this year?

什么是spearfest?

SpearsFest is a day when members of the 哥伦比亚大学 community are invited to share with one another the wide variety of academic excellence 和 experiential learning occurring across campus. Students, faculty, 和 staff are all invited to 现在 和 参加 individual 和 group 现在ations. The program runs conference style with 现在ations 和 events throughout the day in classrooms 和 event spaces across campus. Annual evening programs will follow in Spears Concert Hall 和 Cottingham Theater. Classes before 5pm are canceled for the day to allow the community to participate in this celebration recognizing community, 领导, 服务学习. 

What time is SpearsFest? Is there a schedule of events?

Morning/Afternoon* - Concurrent 现在ations

Evening* - Annual Programs & 事件 

*A complete schedule for the day with detailed information on all 现在ations 和 their times & locations will be released AFTER the deadline for 现在ation proposals (April 2). Watch for the schedule to be sent by email the week prior to SpearsFest. 

What's this year's theme?

Please note, 现在ations do NOT have to be related to the annual theme.

  • 现在 
    • Classroom style 现在ation 
      • As an individual (typically 25 minutes)
      • As part of a group (typically 50 minutes)
    • Poster style 现在ation
      • As an individual or group, create 和 display an academic poster on a table at a walkabout reception. (You should be available to answer questions 和 share about your research or experience while referencing the images, 文本, 表, 和/or graphs that you've used on your poster to summarize your research or experience. 一般为90分钟)  
  • 参加 
    • The week before SpearsFest a schedule of events will be posted on the website, 和 shared via email. The schedule will be created AFTER 现在ation registration closes. 
How do I sign-up to 现在? 

To register to 现在, please submit a 现在ation Proposal form. 

What is the deadline to register by submitting a 现在ation Proposal?

What are the awards given out every year at SpearsFest? 
  • The Caroline Whitson "领导 Makes a Difference" Student Award 
    • This award goes to a student who has demonstrated a commitment to community service 和/or service learning throughout their undergraduate career. Recipients of this award demonstrate social awareness or willingness to affect social change through service.

  • The Caroline Whitson "领导 Makes a Difference" Corporate & Community Professional Award
    • This award goes to an agency or organization that demonstrates a commitment to human rights within the communities in which they work or do business. Recipients of this award demonstrate social responsibility that is embodied within their corporate or organization strategic planning.

Why is it called SpearsFest?

SpearsFest is named in honor of Dr. Spears, who served as president of 哥伦比亚大学 from 1951-1977. 当R博士牧师. Wright Spears was hired in 1951, the 校董会 said they were looking for a president with “enthusiasm, 能源, 愿景, 赢得尊重.” For over 20 years, Dr. Spears demonstrated these qualities 和 more, forever changing the institution 和 its community.
